A BRIEF HISTORY OF MILLER BAY ESTATES

(published circa 1999)

Miller Bay Estates (MBE) is a real estate development consisting of 462 lots distributed over five divisions, two of which are located on the waterfront of Miller Bay. It officially began in 1969 when Miller Bay Company, Inc. and Miller's Haven, Inc. got approval from Kitsap County to start Division 2 (218 lots) in July, 1969. Division 1 (22 lots) soon followed in September of 1969 and Division 3 (82 lots) was approved in January, 1970. Division 4, the largest with 134 lots. was developed by Miller Bay Associates and Miller's Bay Company, Inc. and was begun in May, 1970. H & M Development Associates developed Division 5 (6 lots), which broke ground in February of 1978. The Covenants, Conditions. Restrictions and Reservations of each division were recorded soon after approval for the development was granted by the county As of February 2001, there are approximately 371 homes in MBE.

Bay Yacht and Beach Club, a nonprofit corporation, began with the adoption of by-laws on October 13, 1969; its purpose being to provide for the use and maintenance of the property of the corporation. Because of the somewhat cumbersome name, members adopted the fictitious name of Miller Bay Homeowner's Association, under which it can legally do business. The Board of Directors of Miller Bay Yacht and Beach Club is comprised of volunteers from the membership of the corporation (YOU!) and is elected to a one-year term at an annual meeting held each September. The only requirement for service is being a member in good standing.

A 1685 sq. ft. clubhouse was built in Division 4 in 1977. It was accompanied by an outdoor pool and has since been surrounded by a playground area with swing sets and basketball hoop. Picnic areas at both the clubhouse and waterfront tract were installed in the summer of 1995. Over the years the clubhouse has been equipped with a pool table, range, refrigerator, and water cooler. In 2000 a septic drain field was installed in anticipation of putting running water and restroom facilities in the clubhouse proper. The clubhouse can be reserved by members in good standing, free of charge. (cleaning deposit required), pending availability. An office is maintained at the clubhouse, which is equipped with a message phone and copy machine.

As the management of the corporation became more complicated. the need for more input was recognized and in 1992 eight committees were designated to provide input to the board on the needs of our community. Manned by community volunteers (YOU. again!), the Architectural. Activities, Facilities, Hospitality, Landscape and Grounds, Legal, Newsletter, and Pool Committees investigate options and report to the board on issues that affect the membership and its holdings. You are encouraged to volunteer on as many committees as you wish.
